If the Satyriasis split was an unquestionable apex in ORE’s discography, then Apocalips, released the following year, is sadly a step down in quality. It continues exploring by and large the same themes both lyrically and musically, with the rather repetitive industrial/neofolk song structure being complemented by more ‘musical’ instrumentation, and Tomas’ vocals moving at times more towards singing rather than spoken word, and having an increasingly sensual edge to them.
When the song material on Apocalips is good, such as I Think About Germany And The End Of The World, it is very good. However, there is a more than acceptable amount of less than stellar, even boring and trivial material on this album, and therefore, despite all of the good tracks, Apocalips is just a tad above average as an album. Tracks such as Love Always Dies, But Hate Is Forever and Hell Is My Refuge (A Golden Dawn For A Judas Kiss), which hark back to the more martial and industrial origins of ORE, just don’t go anywhere and as such fail to impress.
This version is the re-release on ORE’s current label, Out Of Line, of the album that originally was released on the now defunct Cold Meat Industries. It is a shame that even the more recent releases of ORE are today out of print and go for what I’d say are pretty outrageous prices on, for example, Discogs. I’m sure there is a constant demand for these albums, and therefore it would be nice to see them remain in print.
